Understanding the Significance of What Is Hope

Hope is not merely a fleeting emotion or wishful thinking; it is a powerful force that sustains us through life’s most trying moments. In the realm of mental health, hope plays a crucial role in fostering resilience, promoting positive coping strategies, and facilitating recovery. Research has shown that individuals who possess a strong sense of hope are better equipped to navigate challenges, cope with stress, and maintain a sense of well-being.

So, what is hope? And how do we find it?

At its core, hope encompasses a belief in the possibility of a better future, a sense of agency and control over one’s life, and the resilience to persevere in the face of obstacles. It is a dynamic and multifaceted construct that encompasses optimism, faith, and a willingness to seek out and seize opportunities for growth and renewal.

Exploring What Is Hope through Christian Tradition

The Christian faith offers a profound perspective on hope, rooted in the belief in a loving and compassionate God who offers redemption, restoration, and renewal to all who seek Him. Central to Christian theology is the concept of hope as an anchor for the soul, a steadfast assurance of God’s presence and provision even in the midst of trials and tribulations.

Scripture abounds with verses that speak to the transformative power of hope and the promise of God’s faithfulness. In the book of Romans, the apostle Paul writes, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13, NIV). This verse encapsulates the essence of Christian hope—a hope that transcends our circumstances and empowers people to persevere with confidence and optimism.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts to cultivate hope, believe in our scriptures, or surround ourselves with all things Christian, hope can fade. Hope can feel like a distant idea, something that only the “best” Christians obtain. Hope is not a certainty in God; rather, hope is a trust in our God to be with us, to abide, to stay steadfast.

How Trust Contributes to What Hope Is

Trust is a complex matter — trust requires safety, history, and a knowing of the other. Trust is something that is built — it’s not something we just do or give anytime we want. Putting our hope in God, trusting in God, is an ever evolving process. So many churches in our evangelical organizations preach certainty as the ultimate pinnacle of our faith life — to know more about God, to have answers, and to be certain about all things about our faith is what truly makes us good followers of Christ.

Certainty provides function for us; it tells us how the world, the universe, and how God works. Certainty provides us an equation for our faith — if X thing happens, Y result will be experienced. A few examples:

  • If I sin by thinking sexually about that woman or man I see at the gym, God sees that and my relationship with Him will become separated until I confess my sin.
  • If I honor and praise God in my suffering, God will see me and my suffering will eventually end.
  • If I do these good things (worship, serve, disciple, baptize, convert, preach, etc) God will see that and make my seat in heaven higher; I am building up treasure in heaven.

These are a few of the teachings that we see within our churches that give a message of certainty. If we’re honest though, life often is much more grey, not so black and white, neat and organized:

  • We see that woman or man at the gym that we imagine being intimate with, but we have hope in whoever we date will provide us partnership, have similar values as us, and being around them will give us life.
  • Your suffering can be long, difficult, and even chronic. It feels as though it becomes unbearable, so you seek help from a counselor. You find out along the way that you disthymia or chronic depression; this suffering is something you’ll be living with the rest of your life, and be regulating with medication.
  • You do good things to no avail, yet nothing in your circumstances change. You feel tired, resentful, and burnt out. Is this really what it takes to build up treasure in heaven? Why is everything so difficult? And will I ever experience the fruits of my labor?

Certainty, having an answer for everything, which we call systematic theology, robs us of the mystery of God. Systematic theology attempts to explain the unexplainable, provide certainty and answers for things that are uncertain and mysterious.

hope

When we admit that we have uncertainty, doubt, lack of understanding, when we embrace mystery, that is where we find ourselves in the loving presence of the Divine. When we embrace mystery, that is having hope; we trust in what we do not see, what we can not explain — it is something that we can only experience in the very fabric of our bones and souls.

Hope is a trust in the mystery of what we can not see. We relent ourselves to how incredibly vast Yahweh is and how incredibly small our concepts of Yahweh are. Hope is knowing we will never know, yet still choosing to walk and embrace the God that is, and will remain, a mystery.

how to cultivate hope

Practical Strategies for Cultivating Hope

  1. Prayer and Meditation: Regular prayer and meditation serve as spiritual practices that can nourish hope and deepen one’s connection to God. Taking time to quiet the mind, reflect on scripture, and commune with the divine can provide solace, guidance, and a renewed sense of purpose. Centering Prayer is a form of Christian meditation that helps us experience the love and presence of God, thus cultivating hope in our lives.
  2. Community Support: Surrounding oneself with a supportive community of faith and like-minded individuals can provide invaluable encouragement, empathy, and practical assistance. Whether through a church community, support group, or close-knit circle of friends, fostering meaningful connections with others can help combat feelings of isolation and cultivate a sense of belonging and solidarity. If you’re looking for a church community that embraces the mystery of God, see our list of resources at the bottom of this page.
  3. Scripture Reflection: Engaging in regular scripture reading and reflection can offer inspiration, encouragement, and spiritual nourishment. Delving into passages that speak to themes of hope, resilience, and God’s faithfulness can serve as a source of strength and comfort during difficult times. Additionally, using a resource like the book of common prayer or a book of hours like Thomas Merton’s Book of Hours can be helpful in developing a regular practice of reading and reflecting on scripture.
  4. Self-Care Practices: Prioritizing self-care is essential for maintaining emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Engaging in activities that promote relaxation, joy, and fulfillment—such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time in nature—can help alleviate stress, boost mood, and foster a sense of balance and resilience. Additionally, therapy can be a great place where you can cultivate self-care practices and explore your thoughts, emotions, and spirituality.
